It's that time of the year again when the NFL enters it's final month of the season. While some teams are already out of the playoff picture there are others in the thick of things. Although that one angle to consider in your handicapping arsenal it's one that I'll pass on for now. Instead, today I'm going to look at the NFL coaches to see if there are some that we can exploit to profits. There are some pundits that believe that NFL coaches have very little effect on a team these days as they are nothing but a bunch of high priced players who seldom get motivated by a head coach! While there my be some truth in that I don't feel it's an appropriate approach to discount the ability of a coach to generate profits. After all, they aren't the ones playing the game, but they are certainly the ones who create the game plans that put their teams in a position to win or lose (as the case may be) on any particular Sunday. So, it's with that thought where I focused my attention as we wind down the season. Below are the best and worst ATS coaches during the last month of the NFL Season listed by home, away, favorite, and underdog situations: Profit Coaches Home: Bill Belichick (NE) - 15-6 ATS Away: Fox (Car)- 8-3 ATS Favorite: Jauron (Buf) - 5-2 ATS Underdog: Holmgren (Sea)- 13-6-2 ATS; Reid (Phl)- 11-6 ATS; Gibbs (Wsh)- 28-15-1 ATS Bankroll Draining Coaches Home: Lewis (Cin)- 1-6-1 ATS; Fox (Car) - 3-6 ATS; Gruden (TB) - 6-11 ATS. Away: Dungy (Ind) - 7-15 ATS Favorite: Smith (Chi) - 2-5-1 ATS; Turner (SD) - 5-11 ATS Underdog: Lewis (Cin) 2-5 ATS; Phillips (Dal) 5-9-1 ATS Certainly this is just one of the factors that should be considered when winning in the NFL against the number.
