Football is back on everyone's mind as the Hall of Fame game kicked off 65 games of preseason action in August. With all of these games lined up it is very tempting for the football enthusiast to "get in on the action" prior to the start of the regular season. The flaw in this logic is that it takes a great amount of patience for one to win betting preseason football which means that sometimes it is prudent to pass on a game, even if it is nationally televised, to live to bet another day. Such is the case in Thursday's Nationally televised preseason clash between the Dallas Cowboys and Indianapolis Colts. Certainly one can point to a number of angles and situations that point to one team or the other, but it is my opinion that it is just too close to call. However, since it is on National Television I will weight in with my opinion on the outcome The Indianapolis Colts didn't sit still in the off season even though they are coming off of a Super Bowl victory. They were very busy in the draft this year as they made nine selections. The best one of the bunch looks to be WR Anthony Gonzalez from the Ohio State Buckeyes. Gonzalez has outstanding speed and great hands giving Manning yet another receiver at which to pick apart secondaries with this season. Indianapolis tends to show little interest in the preseason as they were 1-3 SU last season and 0-5 the year before. Their only covers in that time span has been when they have played in domes. The Dallas Cowboys were another team that was very busy in the off season after the departure of Bill Parcells. Dallas went to the free agent market and picked up QB Brad Johnson, OT Leonard Davis, and SS Ken Hamlin. In addition they hit the draft hard picking up DE Anthony Spencer from Purdue who some experts think could win rookie of the year honors this year. The Cowboys have historically taken a very carefree attitude to preseason but did excel last season going 3-1 ATS. However, historically teams that are a 4 or more point favorite playing their first game of the preseason have only produced a 1-4 ATS mark since 1997. The overriding factor in all of this is first year coaches (at least to that particular team) playing their first home games. Already we have seen that factor play itself out in the Hall of Fame game when Pittsburgh played to impress both their new coach and home fans by drubbing the Saints. For those of you who would like to take a position in this game to make it interesting, it is my opinion that the Cowboys are the play. Opinion Play: Take Dallas minus the points. I have a huge preseason package on tap that includes selections on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Monday Nights. Join me and all my other winners at Alexandersports.com
