The NFL pre-season is quickly approaching as the Hall of Fame Game kicks off on August 5th. No doubt, as you pour through the oodles of articles in preparation for football season you will come across diverse opinions on whether or not betting on the NFL pre-season makes sense. I am of the opinion that profits can be made but only if you have the discipline and time to really research each game. What I mean is that certain coaches think this part of the season is important while others don't, some play veterans while some don't, and some teams have important positions up for grabs so you're you're more likely to get high performance during all games. All of these factors need to be considered and take time to understand and track.

However, that is not to say that going it on your own won't be profitable, it's just a bit more time consuming. So, for those of you who would like to tackle the pre-season I have listed some important trends for the early games that should give you an edge.

Trend #1: Teams coming off of the Hall of Fame game who scored 10 points or less and are at home playing an opponent who is playing their first game is a horrible 1-4 ATS since 1997. The last team to cover was Pittsburgh way back in 1998. So take a look at going against New Orleans or Pittsburgh in their second pre-season game if either team scored 10 or less points in the Hall of Fame Game.

Trend #2: Taking favorites of 4 or more points who are both playing their first pre-season game of the year is a sure loser as teams in that position are a money losing 7-12 ATS since 1997. Be careful with this one however, as the mark is 3-3 ATS the last 6 times this situation has happened.
